The feature film "Utopian Cities in an Ancestral Future," produced by the (se)cura humana collective, documents the transformation of an urban territory and polluted rivers into a space of dreams and revitalization.
Guided by the concept of Ancestral Future by Aílton Krenak, participants of an artistic residency explore the city of Osasco and its rivers, creating concrete actions and using artificial intelligence to manipulate their utopian visions and dreams. Through artistic creations and interventions, the film presents a new city exercise where the past and future converge in the present, in the gap between advanced technology and ancestral knowledge.
Utopian Cities in an Ancestral Future delves into the past to inspire the revitalization of a degraded river. This film documents an artivist residency led by the collective (se)cura humana, invited by Sesc Osasco. In it, artists explore urban spaces and the polluted riverbanks of the city. Guided by Aílton Krenak’s concept of Ancestral Future, participants are encouraged to dream and co-create a new city through creative visions.
These dreams are brought to life through artificial intelligence, transforming them into photographic scenarios where participants immerse themselves. The photos are printed as lambe-lambes (wheat-paste posters), which participants then hand-alter with drawings and engravings. The final post-production also uses AI to reimagine and transform moments from the residency, crafting a vision of an (im)possible world.
The narrative explores the disconnect between the city and its rivers, emphasizing the need for a collective consciousness that values common goods. Through interactions with the local community, the film sheds light on how colonial legacies have shaped modern attitudes toward land and water. As the film unfolds, viewers are invited to reflect on their role in environmental preservation and imagine a regenerative future, where utopias are realized through shared efforts, ancestral practices, and the renaming of the stream—now the Guatá Porã River, the "Good Path."
